Brown University

PARTICULAR NEED:

WISER’s campus expansion required the construction of new foundational infrastructure.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTION:

Construct a new septic tank to appropriately deal with waste in a safe and healthy manner to make the rest of the expansion possible.

ENROLLMENT:

240 students

AREA OVERVIEW:

Muhuru Bay is a small rural fishing village in the Nyanza province on the shore of Lake Victoria. The Nyanza province has some of the lowest rates for girls’ completion of secondary school with a 7% regional graduation rate and a 3% regional college enrollment rate, in contrast to 100% of WISER students graduating and 93% enrolling in college. Due to lack of support, forced marriages, and early pregnancies, girls’ education in the region is largely undervalued.

SUSTAINABILITY PLAN:

Johnson & Johnson has been a global partner with WISER for 16 years, providing grant funding, support, and connections to ensure the program is sustained.
